Lexical Databases as a Base for Broad Coverage Ontologies
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper deals with current lexical databases that are seen as a basis for broad-coverage general-purpose ontologies. Various extensions and refinements of existing multilingual lexical knowledge bases are proposed with the aim of improving the capabilities of these resources. The main goal lies in the effort to gain a better lexical knowledge representation, which is crucial to coping with the requirements of the Semantic Web. The final section discusses the question of how lexical knowledge bases can be shared and combined. It presents the designed and implemented system WOMANISER that is able to merge independently developed parts of ontologies, check inconsistencies and report errors. The paper ends with the future directions of this research.

Representing Multilingual Data as Linked Data: the Case of BabelNet 2.0
Recent years have witnessed a surge in the amount of semantic information published on the Web. Indeed, the Web of Data, a subset of the Semantic Web, has been increasing steadily in both volume and variety, transforming the Web into a ‘global database’ in which resources are linked across sites. Linguistic fields – in a broad sense – have not been left behind, and we observe a similar trend wi...
متن کاملAn Environment for Merging and Testing Large Ontologies
Large-scale ontologies are becoming an essential component of many applications including standard search (such as Yahoo and Lycos), ecommerce (such as Amazon and eBay), configuration (such as Dell and PC-Order), and government intelligence (such as DARPA’s High Performance Knowledge Base (HPKB) program). The ontologies are becoming so large that it is not uncommon for distributed teams of peop...
متن کاملPrinciples of Lexical Network Systemic Modeling (Principes de modélisation systémique des réseaux lexicaux) [in French]
We introduce a new approach for manually constructing broad-coverage lexical ressources based on a specific type of lexical network called lexical system. Drawing on experience gained from the construction of the French Lexical Network (fr-LN), we begin by formally characterizing lexical systems as “small-world” graphs of lexical units that are primarily organized around the system of Meaning-T...
متن کاملEnriching a lexical semantic net with selectional preferences by means of statistical corpus analysis
Broad-coverage ontologies which represent lexical semantic knowledge are being built for more and more natural languages. Such resources provide very useful information for word sense disambiguation, which is crucial for a variety of NLP tasks (e.g. semantic annotation of corpora, information retrieval, or semantic inferencing). Since the manual encoding of such ontologies is very labour-intens...
متن کاملOntologies and Databases: More than a Fleeting Resemblance
Formal ontologies can be seen as mathematical objects that form the range of a classical "Tarskian" semantics interpretation mapping of first-order language constructs that could represent situations, functions or procedures related to a given domain. Some design methods and techniques such as view integration that were originally developed for large databases, where the "data models" and their...
